ChatGPT Flashcards: How to Make Them, and Why They Don't Stick

TL;DR: ChatGPT drafts usable flashcards from your notes if you prompt it well, and this post gives you the prompt. But ChatGPT has no review queue and no scheduling, so the cards either sit in a chat window or get pushed through a manual CSV pipeline into Anki. "Make me flashcards from this" might be the most common study prompt ChatGPT gets. And it delivers, sort of. You paste a lecture, you get twenty question-and-answer pairs, and it feels like you just saved an evening of typing.

I want to be fair to this workflow because I have used it. The drafting part genuinely works. The problem is everything after the drafting, and that part is why most ChatGPT flashcards get reviewed once and never again.

How to make flashcards with ChatGPT

If you are going to do it, do it properly. The default output, when you just ask for flashcards, tends toward long-winded answers and questions that give away the answer. A tighter prompt fixes most of that:

Turn these notes into flashcards. Rules: one fact per card, questions phrased for recall (not yes/no or recognition), answers no longer than two sentences, skip anything that is context rather than a testable fact. Output as a two-column table: question, answer.

Then paste your notes or upload the document. A few things raise the quality further:

  • Work in small batches. A whole textbook chapter in one go produces shallow cards. One lecture or one section at a time keeps the cards specific.
  • Tell it your exam. "These are for a pharmacology midterm" changes what it treats as important.
  • Ask for cloze deletions where they fit. Fill-in-the-blank cards work well for definitions and sequences.
  • Delete freely. ChatGPT pads. Expect to cut a third of the draft, and the cards you cut are usually the ones testing trivia. Most flashcards are bad covers what to keep.

Done this way, the draft is decent. Now comes the part nobody talks about.

The problem: a chat window is not a review system

A flashcard is not useful on the day you make it. It becomes useful the third, fifth, tenth time it comes back, timed against the point where you were about to forget it. That timing is the entire mechanism, and it is what the forgetting curve research is about.

ChatGPT has none of that machinery. There is no due queue. There is no record that you failed card 12 last Tuesday and should see it again tomorrow, while card 30 can wait three weeks. You can ask it to quiz you, and it will, but every conversation starts cold. The model does not carry your per-card history, and a chat scroll is not a place cards live. They get buried under the next conversation.

So the honest description of ChatGPT flashcards is: generation without scheduling. That is half a study system, and it is the cheap half. The drafting was never the hard part. Remembering the material in October is.

The workaround, and what it costs

The standard fix is to use ChatGPT as a front end for Anki. Ask for the cards as CSV, save the file, import it into Anki on desktop, and let Anki's scheduler take over. This works, and if you already run Anki it is a reasonable pipeline.

But look at the steps you just signed up for, per lecture, for an entire semester: prompt, export, fix the formatting ChatGPT got slightly wrong, import on a desktop, sync to your phone. The friction is small on day one and corrosive by week six. Pipelines that need five manual steps stop getting run, and when the pipeline stops, the cards stop.

There is also a quieter cost. Editing happens in the wrong place. You trim cards in a chat window or a spreadsheet, before they are cards, instead of inside the app where you can see how they review.

The middle column is the power-user answer, and I mean that without sarcasm. If you already know Anki, the CSV route gets you free generation on top of a real scheduler. The Anki alternatives guide is honest about when Anki is the right call.

The right column is the same loop with the plumbing removed. Imprimo takes the source directly, a PDF, pasted text, a URL, a YouTube link, or a photographed page, drafts the deck, and puts every card through a review gate where you edit or delete before anything enters the deck. When ChatGPT is still the right tool

I am not going to pretend ChatGPT has no place here.

  • You want to interrogate the material first. Asking follow-up questions, getting analogies, having a concept re-explained: ChatGPT is genuinely good at this, and understanding before memorizing is the right order.
  • You need a format no app supports. Weird custom card structures, cards in two languages at once, whatever. A chat model will bend in ways a product will not.
  • You are already deep in the Anki + CSV workflow and it is working. Do not fix what runs.

What ChatGPT should not be is the place your cards live. Understanding is a conversation. Retention is a schedule, and a chat window does not keep one.

The short version

  1. ChatGPT drafts decent flashcards if you prompt for one fact per card and short recall-style answers.
  2. It cannot schedule them. No queue, no per-card history, no forgetting-curve timing. That is the half that makes flashcards work.
  3. The CSV-to-Anki pipeline closes the gap at the cost of five manual steps per lecture, forever.
